Alpine Program Director

Position Title: Alpine Program Director
Position Type: Full-Time Year-Round
Reports to: Executive Director
Salary: $130,000 per year, plus benefits. Benefits include employer-sponsored health insurance, a ski pass, discounted program fees for family members, and eligibility for a 401(k) retirement plan with employer match after one year of employment. Job Objective

The AVSC Alpine program is crucial to the Club’s competitive mix.  AVSC is a leading choice for training in mountain-based winter disciplines. It significantly influences the Club’s image, locally and within the larger world of competitive skiing.  We want AVSC to be the premier Alpine program in the country. The program has complex training demands involving all local mountains and is active throughout the year. 

The Alpine Program Director coordinates all aspects of the competitive Alpine program: training philosophy and its implementation, hiring of coaches, access to training venues, risk management, representation with USSA and RMD, coordination of events hosted, parent involvement, and budget to ensure:

  • The ongoing health of the Alpine program
  • An emphasis on AVSC core values
  • The realization of the full potential of Alpine athletes.

The Alpine Program Director must exhibit the superior organizational, communication, and coaching skills necessary to oversee the development of approximately 200 athletes participating at various levels within Alpine’s team programs, as well as overseeing and managing around 30 staff each winter season.  The director is expected to have a solid on-hill presence during the winter months. 


Scope

The Alpine Program Director works under the general supervision of the Executive Director. They frequently interact with a broad spectrum of Aspen Skiing Company staff, the AVSC Board Program Committee, officials from USSA, FIS, and RMD, officials from Aspen and down-valley schools, and other parents, volunteers, and supporters.  The Alpine Program Director is responsible for a budget of over $1,300,000.  

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure coaches understand, embrace and effectively convey AVSC values.
  • Clarify goals and philosophy for all programs to ensure a clear path for athletic advancement and consistency of progression from U10 skiers through Post-Grads.
  • Select the optimum schedule of competitions to host.
  • Coordinate the program of summer on-snow training opportunities.
  • Actively recruit post-graduate athletes to AVSC.
  • Ensure AVSC athletes are represented at the highest levels of competition.
  • Work with Venue Manager and ASC personnel to ensure access to training venues.
  • Manage guest athletes' attendance and fee collection throughout the season.
  • Thoroughly document delivery of the program on an annual basis.
  • Ensure end-of-season evaluations of athletes and programs.
  • Ensure end-of-season debriefs with parent groups.
  • Support the development of all information for the program guide, enrollment materials, and manuals for parents and staff.
  • Work with ASK Director to ensure the recruitment of participants.
  • Address all Code of Conduct issues.
  • Ensure programs are FUN.
  • Coordinate hiring and evaluation of all staff.
  • Ensure training of staff in all aspects of risk management on the hill and the vehicles.
  • Provide a clear path of professional development for all staff.
  • Track and learn from safety incident data each year.
  • Annually document training of all coaches.
  • Host outstanding competitions.
  • Maintain close working relationships with decision-makers at RMD and USSA.
  • Maintain close working relationships with Program Directors at other clubs.
  • Professionally deal with all parent contacts.
  • Work with the Executive Director to establish the annual budget.
  • Ensure enrollment and retention goals are met.
  • Implement changes as needed to achieve financial goals.

Other

  • Assist Executive Director in fundraising for AVSC.
  • Assist with and participate in Club-wide functions.
  • Special projects as assigned.

Physical Requirements and Expectations:

  • Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 50-75 pounds.
  • Must be able and willing to work in inclement weather.
  • Reasonable accommodations may enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • Ability to ski competently with load.
    • Coaches should be limited to skiing with one bundle of gates, carrying one roll of netting, or dragging two rolls of B net, carrying one salt bag or water jug, and a backpack full of gear.
  • Ability to demonstrate technical skill and drills.
    • Coaches can ski/demonstrate in a course if Alpine Director approves at the start of each season. The Alpine Director will maintain a database of coaches that qualify each season, this list can be modified throughout the season.
    • Coach must wear all appropriate protective equipment (helmet, shin guards…)
    • Forerunning is not allowed. 
  • Ability to free ski the whole mountain.
    • Must wear helmet when free skiing.
    • Skis should remain on snow, no jumps (including natural terrain) or rails.
    • While freeskiing, Coaches must assess their limits and stay within them.
    • ​​​​​​​Reminder:  Coaches are coaching during freeski times.
