Facing blizzard-like conditions this past Saturday at Sunlight and moving to Beaver Creek on Sunday didn't deter the 9-14 year-old members of AVSC's Alpine team. The team posted solid results in four separate slalom races including some great finishes from Tristan Lane, Heidi Small, Galena Wardle and Anna Patterson.
Small took charge in the competitive J4 age class both days, finishing second, fourth, sixth and fifth. "Heidi really skied the fall line on Saturday with a purpose," remarked AVSC J4 coach Fordy Sinkinson. "After a great week of training she kept the ball rolling right into competition." Galena Wardle matched Smalls' effort with some top results of her own including second place on Saturday afternoon followed by fourth and third on Sunday. "Galena put it all together for some very fast runs," said Sinkinson.
Dairinn Bowers was the third fastest J3 racer (12th overall) on Saturday morning and won her J3 age class in the afternoon. "Outstanding skiing from Dairinn," said AVSC Head Age Class coach Alice Black. J4 skier Nikki Cardamone posted a ninth on Saturday afternoon for her age class and ten and ninth on Sunday. Zoe Spanos finished eighth and 11th for her age group on Saturday and 11th again on Sunday. Teammate Amelia Heisler impressed the coaches with a ninth place result for her age on Saturday afternoon. " She showed great improvement this weekend," said Sinkinson. Young J5 skier Anna Patterson showed some older rivals how it's done, taking third and fourth for her age class on Saturday and fourth and fifth on Sunday. "She got after it this weekend and cross-blocked the gates the whole way down," said Sinkinson. India Cardamone was fifth for her J5 age class twice on Saturday and seventh on Sunday and Georgia Alliata was seventh twice for the J5s on Saturday and tenth on Sunday.
Tristan Lane posted another solid win on Saturday morning with a 1/2 second margin of victory, then followed with a second place in the afternoon and a third and a second on Sunday. "He's skiing very strong and making a lot slalom courses look easy," said Sinkinson. Chapin Newhard found his stride with a fourth and tenth on Saturday and a fifth on Sunday. "Chapin proving to us that he can now finish what he starts," remarked Sinkinson. Luke Prosence was 7th and 4th on Saturday and "Luke was not satisfied with seventh and got more aggressive his second run," said Sinkinson. Bridger Gile took ninth and 13th on Saturday and 11th and 13th on Sunday. Cameron Allen finished 14th, 16th on Saturday and 13th on Sunday morning. Tyler Spence broke through with a 14th place result on Sunday afternoon. Graham Houtsma finished 17th on Saturday afternoon, then took 18th and 20th the following day. "This whole group of guys has a lot of natural talent and the ability to perform when it counts," remarked Sinkinson. J5 skier Billy Spanos cracked the top-ten and finished 9th for his age class at Beaver Creek on Sunday morning.
