Lane Battles for Two Wins at Breckenridge Super-G

The 11-12 year-old AVSC Alpine J4 team battled visibility, cold temps and up to 50 mph winds during three Super-G races at Breckenridge this past weekend, January 23-24. Tristan Lane won both races on Saturday and Luke Prosence, Galena Wardle and Heidi Small all claimed podium spots despite the tough conditions.

Galena Wardle had a terrific performance, finishing second, third and fourth as a first-year J4 skier. "She took a pretty straight line and found speed in all the right places," said AVSC Alpine J4 coach Ramsay Hill. "She's not afraid to be aggressive and has a really nice touch on the snow." Heidi Small showcased her own attacking style on the way to finishing fourth and fifth on Saturday, then stepped up to second place on Sunday. "Heidi was the only girl right on the panels all the way down," remarked Hill. "She proved she belongs with the top group." Zoe Spanos finished 16th, 21st and 12th and Nikki Cardamone jumped from 20th to 16th to 14th for the weekend. "It was Nikki's best result yet," said Hill. "She has the potential to break out from the pack and follow in her brother Devon's winning footsteps." Amelia Heisler was 22nd and 29th and Valentina Gregg moved from 24th to two 18th place finishes. "Tina's been tightening her line and it's paying off," said Hill. Madison Cheo finished 26th, 24th and 23rd and Hill remarked, "Madison did a great job on Sunday by beating half the field as a first year racer." Camden Brendlinger was 25th twice and 27th, and Pascale Augspurger was 28th, 33rd and 31st. Hanna Mass took 34th, 29th and 27th, Nikki Blizzard was 32nd and 34th twice, and Dolores Sharaf finished 35th, 30th and 26th.

Tristan Lane had the winning hand on Saturday and flew down the hill for two straight victories. He then followed up with a third on Sunday. "Tristan was aggressive and held on to the straightest line," said Hill. "His skiing has matured greatly this year both in tactics and technique." Glenwood Springs' Luke Prosence finished right behind Lane in second, fourth and sixth. "Luke is a super-clean skier and is deceptively fast because of how smooth he skis," said Hill. Chapin Newhard cracked the top-ten in ninth and eighth place on Saturday. "He's made great strides with his skiing," said Hill. Tyler Spence took 12th and 11th place twice and is "starting to figure out how tactics and line can make a real difference," said Hill. Cameron Allen finished 18th and 15th twice. "Cameron's technically really strong and he'll be one to watch in the future," said Hill. Erik Gagen moved from 20th to 13th in the afternoon, and after struggling in the morning, Graham Houtsma "had a breakthrough run" on Saturday afternoon for 15th place. "Both of them got after it and it paid off," said Hill. Gagen was 25th and Houtsma 19th on Sunday. Peter Barron was 40th and 41st and teammate Leo McDonald was 43rd and 44th. Keegan Callahan finished 47th, 45th and 46th, Griffin Gilchrist was 44th and 47th and Jesse Ransford finished 46th twice and 47th. David Uhlfelder finished 52nd on Saturday and 51st on Sunday.
