AVSC Snowboarder Molly Wilson took a huge step forward in her career with a third place finish against the world's top female snowboarders at the Mammoth Grand Prix in Mammoth, California on January 10th. Wilson, a Basalt native, faced a daunting slopestyle course featuring a huge 70-foot table top jump at the top and another 60-foot table top at the bottom. "Molly was fearless out there when faced with some of the biggest terrain park features she's ever encountered," said AVSC Snowboard coach Travis Mclain.
Wilson attacked the course with a big method air off the 70-footer right into a backside 360 off a 50-foot step up. For the rail section she landed a boardslide 270 and a 50-50 to frontside on the flat down. At the bottom Molly aired a frontside grab over a 40-foot step down and closed with a huge backside 540 off the final 60-foot table top. "Molly probably went about 80 feet off of that final table top," remarked Mciain. "She came up big when she needed to." Molly's finish put her on the podium just behind Jamie Anderson of South Lake Tahoe, CA and Isabelle Lalive of Breckenridge.
AVSC snowboarder Chase Demeulenaere finished 20th overall out of 80 competitors on the men's side but was the top finisher for riders under 18 years of age. "He had an awesome result," said Mclain. Demeulenaere's run consisted of a backside 720, a frontside 720, a boardslide 270 and a boardslide to fakey on the rails, a half-cab on the step down and finished with a frontside 720 melon on the final 60-foot table top. "Chase is going up against some of the world's best and he's riding with a lot of confidence especially given his age," said Mclain.
