CROSS-COUNTRY, NORDIC JUMPING, AND NORDIC COMBINED EXPLAINED

Cross-Country skiing involves two different techniques; Classic and Skating. Classic is the traditional technique that usually comes to mind when someone thinks of cross-country skiing. Skating is a faster technique that is similar to ice skating.

Nordic Jumping is what you see at the Olympics where skiers jump for distance but are also judged on style. New jumpers will learn the basics on our beginner jump next to the clubhouse then graduate to our larger jumps on Eagle Hill / Tiehack.

Nordic Combined is an Olympic Sport that combines cross-country skiing (skating) and Nordic jumping. Nordic Combined programs are available at the Team level. Younger skiers interested in Nordic Combined are encouraged to enroll in both an XC and jumping program.

EQUIPMENT

Youth Nordic equipment is difficult to find once the season starts. The Ute Mountaineer and Aspen Cross-Country Center are your best sources for equipment. The ski swaps are hit and miss but do not usually offer a good selection of youth Nordic equipment. The AVSC Nordic Equipment Night in the mid-September is your best opportunity to obtain equipment. NORDIC BASE CAMP PROGRAMS ENTRY LEVEL & ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AGE OFFERED IN ASPEN AND SPRING GULCH / CARBONDALE

Our Base Camp programs are designed to meet the needs of the younger skier by teaching skills through a series of fun drills and games. Keeping it fun is the primary goal! Most of our programs teach classic technique only but a few offer a skating option. Snacks and hot chocoa will be served at the end of every practice. NORDIC TEAM PROGRAMS DEVELOPMENT AND COMPETITION TEAMS MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL AGE

Our team level programs are designed to further the development of the student athlete in all aspects of the sport. The Development team is suitable for entry level skiers. All team athletes will learn both classic and skating techniques. Team race suit and warm-up (or jumping suit) will be provided for use during the season. All team level programs start and finish at the AVSC clubhouse. See below for details and registration information.

Competition licenses are required for the following and must be purchased separately: XC Comp: Rocky Mountain Nordic license Jumping and Nordic Combined Comp: USSA jumping license

Intro to Nordic Jumping Register Now!
Want to learn how to catch the biggest air around under the safest possible supervision? This is the place to start to learn how to fly! Jumping equipment if provided (skis and boots). This program is strictly local - no out-of-town camps and competitions. Kids can also learn the Olympic sport of Nordic Combined by enrolling in this program and a cross-country program right for their age.

Cross-Country Grades 1&2 Register Now!
This is a fun, learn-to-ski cross-country skiing program geared towards the younger skier. Only classic technique will be taught - fish scale skis are recommended. Participants will receive snacks and hot cocoa at practice! AVSC rental skis/boot/pole packages may be included for an additional fee.

Cross-Country Grades 3&4 Beginner/Intermediate Register Now!
This is a fun, learn-to-ski cross-country skiing program for both beginners and those will just a little previous experience. Only classic technique will be taught - fish scale skis are recommended. Participants will receive snacks and hot cocoa at practice! AVSC rental skis/boot/pole packages may be included for an additional fee.

Cross-Country Grades 3&4 Intermediate/Advanced Register Now!
This program is geared for kids with previous cross-country experience looking to have fun and improve their skills. Classic and skating techniques will be taught - fish scale skis are NOT recommended. Visit the Nordic program section of the website for equipment recommendations. Participants will receive snacks and hot cocoa at practice! No practice over winter break.

Cross-Country Middle School Devo Register Now!
This program is for grades 5-8 of all abilities, from the first timers to the seasoned veterans. No previous experience is required. Skiers will develop their skate and classic techniques and will have the opportunity to also compete in middle school sanctioned races around the state. There will be 5 of these fun races throughout the season, at areas like Vail, Steamboat, and Frisco. These Saturday 1-day trips are optional (but would be a lot of fun!). A team race suit and warm-ups are included in the cost of the program. Visit the Nordic program section of the AVSC website for equipment recommendations and rental options. Cross-Country Comp J3-J4 Register Now!
Our competitive programs are designed for those who wish to challenge themselves with more skiing and higher level training and racing. No previous cross-country experience is required but those who are new to cross-country should check with a coach to see which program (Devo or Comp) would be better suited for them (note: athletes with no XC experience but with downhill ski, hockey, or similar skills have joined with very good success).

Cross-Country High School Devo Register Now!
Cross-country skiers will participate in both classic and skate techniques is this recreational based program. Skiers may optionally compete in high school sanctioned races (ie AHS team). Nordic Jumping Comp Register Now!
Nordic Jumping is an Olympic sport where skiers jump for distance but are also judged on style. Nordic Combined is the Olympic sport that combines cross-country skiing (skating) and Nordic jumping. New jumpers will learn the basics on our beginner jump next to the clubhouse then graduate to our larger jump on Tiehack. Jumpers/Combined skiers can participate in out-of-town camps and competitions if they choose. Helmet and USSA Jumping license required. AVSC rental jumping skis and boots may be included for an additional fee. No previous experience required, however good skiing skills and athleticism are advantageous.

Nordic Combined Comp J3-J4 will jump twice a week and ski twice a week with the Cross-Country Comp J3-J4 team. Helmet and USSA Jumping license required. AVSC rental jumping skis and boots may be included for an additional fee.
