AVSC Devo Skiers Notch Top-Tens at Winter Park Devo Championships

16 AVSC Devo Freestyle skiers ages 8-14 proudly represented Aspen in Slopestyle and Moguls at the Rocky Mountain Freestyle Devo Championships at Winter Park, March 13-15. In the last competition of the season, the team notched several top-ten results including a first-ever overall podium finish for Lawson Pisani.

Thomas Hooker led the way for the J3 skiers with a fourth place slopestyle finish, earning valuable points in his last Devo contest for a run that coach Lynn Merriam described as "nice and clean with some big air." 12 year-old Lawson Pisani took sixth place in a field of 41 other J4 skiers with a run featuring a 360 blunt and a 720 disaster. "Lawson was only 3.6 points out of first place," said Merriam. "Scores were very tight at the top." Teammates Jake Gentry, Gage Carr and Noah Wescott-Shamis finished 17th, 20th and 24th. "They all showed phenomenal consistency and each day brought new personal bests," said Merriam.

Joey Lang was the top AVSC skier in his J5 age class, finishing eighth out of 20 for the 9-10 year-olds. Davis Henschell, Jeremy Davis and Andrew Tierney were 11th, 12th and 13th. Almost 8 year-old Simon Wiviott grabbed the silver medal in the J6 age class.

Davis Henschell broke out with his best run of the year in Saturday's J5-J6 moguls competition. Henschell took fifth for the J5s and Joey Lang was just behind in seventh place for a run that included a big 360 off the lone jump. Andrew Tierney finished 12th and Jeremy Davis came back from a mid-season broken collarbone to finish a respectable 16th out of a field of 26 skiers. Not satisfied with silver, Simon Wiviott stepped up to win gold for his J6 age class. "Simon skied cleanly, carved with his full ski and had a beautiful spread eagle," said Merriam. "None of the other J6's had a chance. "

Lawson Pisani fought his way through the course for seventh place for the J4s. "He put together the best run I've ever seen him ski and was only 2.5 points behind the winner," said Merriam. Gage Carr was 18th and Leo Wiviott was 26th out of 47 competitors, solid results for two first-year J4 skiers. Proving that consistency pays off, Pisani's two top-ten results won him the bronze medal for overall combined. "Lawson's got a bright future," said Merriam. "He's an exceptional athlete and a pleasure to coach. It's exciting that he could represent Aspen and AVSC on the podium."
