Imagine living in a town whose dominant feature was a world-class ski mountain without the means for local children to enjoy it regardless of their family's income. Imagine the polarizing result of having two categories of residents, those who could afford to ski or ride and those who couldn't. While some other ski towns are facing this very situation, our organization has spent the last 75 years working to make sure it doesn't happen here. AVSC now celebrates over 350 Latino participants in our programs, 18% of our total enrollment. At AVSC, we're systematically breaking down the barriers to participation in snow sports for all local residents.

AVSC regards cultural integration in the face of widening income disparity as the key issue facing our community. The Roaring Fork Valley needs programs that highlight and promote common ground instead of difference and encourage friendships through shared experiences.

Testimony from local schoolteachers highlights the positive impact AVSC's programs have. According to Aspen Middle School teacher Kathleen Cook, AVSC programs have allowed her ELL students to become more integrated by showing them how to dress in the winter, teaching them social English language skills so they can engage other English speaking students in conversation and teaching them trust and respect for adults. Her students who participate in AVSC are making new friends and are more likely to participate in other school sponsored and extra-curricular activities as a result of their experience with us.

With partners like Gorsuch Ltd, the Gorsuch family, and D&E/Four Mountain Sports, AVSC has helped hundreds of children with free or low-cost equipment to get them on the hill. This season Jeff Gorsuch and Gorsuch Ltd. will once again offer over 100 free ski equipment sets to our neediest scholarship families. D&E will provide 100 sets of donated snowboard equipment. Last season 250 sets were handed out to eager children who would have otherwise been unable to participate.

The generosity of these two great retailers is shaping the character of a generation of children who realize that they too can share in the experience of skiing and snowboarding along with their friends and neighbors.

At AVSC we believe all local children should experience the mountains in winter and are leading the industry in making this goal a reality. Simply put, our long-term goal is to have all our programs reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. Skiing and snowboarding are too much fun not to be shared with everyone. To support us in our efforts to reach all deserving children in the Roaring Fork Valley, please consider a tax-deductible donation today.
